Sciatica is inflammation of the sciatic nerve, the largest and longest nerve in your body. It runs from your spinal cord, all the way down the legs and into the toes. Normally, sciatica affects only one side of the body. Pain often radiates down the buttock or leg and can range from a tingling sensation to a burning, shooting pain that makes standing almost impossible. True sciatica will produce symptoms which extend beyond the back of the knee.
A common cause of sciatica is the misalignment of the spinal bones in the low back or pelvis. Bed rest and epidural injections have shown to be significantly unsuccessful with sciatica, in some cases interfering with healing. Chiropractic has been shown to help relieve sciatic nerve pain by realigning the spinal bones through gentle manipulation, thereby taking pressure off of the sciatic nerve
Sciatica symptoms may appear from a ruptured intervertebral disk, arthritic changes, inflammation and/or muscle spasms which all indicate the presence of long standing uncorrected subluxations (misalignments) which have resulted in degeneration of the spinal joint structures.
