Scoliosis is an abnormal structural curving of the bones of the spine. The bones of the spine do not line up, one on top of each other and straight up and down, as they were designed to be. If seen on an x-ray, the bones stack in a kind of side to side wave.
Scoliosis usually consists of two curves, the original curve and a compensatory curve in the opposite direction. Improper curvatures may develop from subluxations (misalignments) in the spine and/or pelvis, congenital development, leg length inequality, scar tissue contraction, spinal injuries, muscle imbalances, neurological disorders, ocular imbalances, bone deformities, rickets and more.
When the spine suffers this kind of twisted curvature, a great deal of stress and abnormal function occurs in the body. The ability of the nervous system to coordinate and control all structures and organs of the body is affected. Worst of all, even the slightest scoliosis tends to progress with time. Leaving any scoliosis untreated always results in early degeneration of the spinal joints and progressively declining health.
Many people have found that chiropractic is very successful in stopping the increase of spinal curvature which is seen as scoliosis progresses. Chiropractic care helps reduce the abnormal curvature and return the spine to its healthy straight up and down' formation. A leg length analysis will be performed so that the cause and the cure for your specific scoliosis may be found. Once the scoliotic curve is reduced, then specific spinal adjustments and exercises help support the strength of the spine.
Depending on the cause of the scoliosis, chiropractic may be able to help correct the curve and improve the functioning of the nerves and body in general.
